serious catching up to do...one eventful year!
I really did have the best intentions to keep up with this blog after our wedding. We had the most eventful first year of marriage and a certain turn of events kept me pretty occupied....
Ta da! Introducing: Bennett Edward Laing, born March 28th, 2012 at 8:45 pm. He was 8 pounds, 11 ounces (!) and 21 inches long. Now to back track a bit...
I am the kind of female who has had baby fever since I was about four years old. Michael knew this when he married me and knew that he would not be able to hold me off for long. We got pregnant right away after we "stopped preventing it" in late June and found out very early in the pregnancy in July. I had purchased some cheapie internet pregnancy test strips and got a faint positive on a Sunday evening. The next morning I took a First Response test and that dark pink line appeared right away! I told Michael in the hallway of our house as he was getting ready for work. He was pretty terrified but we were both ecstatic. All day long we g-chatted about baby names, the pregnancy, etc. and were on cloud nine.
I was pretty exhausted right from the start and around 6 weeks debilitating morning (aka all day) sickness set in. Like my sister, who was also pregnant and due 19 weeks before us, I had to take Zofran the entire pregnancy and even then was still getting sick at least once a day up until about 20 weeks. The nausea persisted up to the day I delivered but was more manageable during the second half of the pregnancy. Working from home the majority of the time was such a blessing during that time as I was able to be sick in the comfort and privacy of my own home. Trips out of the house for the home visits and school visits that I conduct were rough and had to be thought out well ahead of time in order to prevent getting sick in front of others. While it was the happiest time of my life thus far, it was also a rough one and Michael and I certainly had our fair share of struggles in dealing with the incapacitating nausea/fatigue/myriad of other pregnancy symptoms! Several times he told me that this would be our only baby because he could not handle another pregnancy such as that...I think he has since reconsidered but we do know now what we are likely to be in for with any subsequent pregnancies that may occur. I've heard that each pregnancy can be totally different and it's possible to have severe morning sickness with one and not the next, but I think in my case the morning sickness factor is more of a genetic predisposition than anything.
During my pregnancy, we traveled to Wichita at 10 weeks for a wedding; Atlanta at 12 weeks to see friends; Burton, Texas at 15 weeks for a weekend at a B & B; and Florida to visit my parents at 29 weeks. We celebrated my 26th birthday and Michael's 33rd birthday. We welcomed our first niece, Sophie Elizabeth, on November 22nd (and I got to witness the birth! Kyle made it look so easy and only pushed for 20 minutes, that lucky girl). We spent lots of time with my mom, who was in town for about six weeks for Sophie's birth. It was such a happy time and we had so much to celebrate and look forward to.
We were elated when we found out we were having a boy in November and we started to prepare for his arrival. More to come...
